The Rewarding Journey of Being a Woman Small Business Owner: Balancing Risk, Reward, and Family

October 21, 2024

Owning a small business as a woman has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. It’s a journey filled with challenges, but the rewards have far outweighed the risks. As a business owner, alongside my husband/business partner, we’ve had the privilege to create something from the ground up, and with that, the freedom to shape it in a way that aligns with my values, vision, and priorities—both professionally and personally.

The Risk vs. Reward of Entrepreneurship

Starting a business comes with its share of risks. There’s the financial investment, the uncertainty of success, and the countless hours spent building something that may or may not take off. But with every risk comes the potential for incredible rewards. For me, the reward hasn’t been just about financial success. It's been the sense of accomplishment that comes from taking control of my career, having the autonomy to make decisions, and witnessing my ideas take shape in a tangible, successful way.

Building a business has also been about creating a workplace culture that reflects the values I hold dear. From fostering a supportive and strengths-based environment to ensuring flexibility and balance, we’ve been able to cultivate a space where both employees and clients feel valued. We set the tone, and I wouldn’t trade that for anything.

Flexibility and Family

One of the greatest rewards of owning our own business is the flexibility it provides. As a mom, it was important for me to not just be involved in my children's lives, but to be present at every milestone, big or small. Owning our business allowed me to design a schedule that ensured I could attend school events, sports games, and family dinners. I never had to choose between my career and my children. Instead, I found a way to have both.

Being able to prioritize family while pursuing my professional ambitions has given me a sense of fulfillment that no traditional 9-to-5 could offer. It's not without its challenges, of course. Balancing the demands of a growing business and being an engaged mother requires planning, discipline, and flexibility. But having the power to set my own boundaries and create my own balance has made it all worthwhile.

Creating a Legacy

When I look at the business we’ve built, I see more than just a company. I see a legacy—a reflection of hard work, creativity, and the ability to balance it all as a woman, entrepreneur, and mother. It hasn’t always been easy, but every hurdle has strengthened my resolve and deepened my appreciation for this journey.

Owning a business as a woman is empowering. It’s a reminder that we don’t have to fit into traditional molds or sacrifice one aspect of our lives for another. We can forge our own paths, create our own schedules, and build businesses that not only serve our communities but also allow us to be fully present for our families.

In the end, the risk has been worth every reward, and the journey continues to be one of the most fulfilling aspects of my life.
